| What year did you join NBFD?: "1971- 55 years of service as of 2026" Larry is also a life member. Did you hold any fire or administration positions?: What is the most memorable emergency that you responded to?: "The square fire in New Bloomfield 1983." Why did you join the Fire Company?: My father was an Assist Chief and President of Shermans Dale Community Fire Co. so I kind of grew up with it. What is the biggest change you have seen?: "The cost of apparatus and equipment." Larry started his volunteer firefighting at the age of 14 with the Shermans Dale Fire Co and then joined NBFD when he moved to New Bloomfield after getting married in 1971. Larry became the Fire Chief following Layton Sheaffer's tenure of 12 years. The fire service in our area was just starting to see changes in apparatus, equipment, and training as Larry became Chief. Larry has played a vital part in the history and the future of NBFD during his years. The Company purchased a new Engine and Tanker, plus rehabbed a military jeep into a brush unit along with adding 5 inch supply line and an Amkus hydraulic rescue tool are some of the big upgrades during his time frame. Company training continued with new state classes that were coming available at the time also. Larry worked in town and over the years he was Chief he hardly missed a call. He was a hands on Chief alongside members at emergency scenes. Chief Smeigh has left a mark within NBFD for sure. Great job Larry! His dedication has made NBFC a better company, and Larry's 55 years of service have not gone unnoticed. Thanks Larry, for all you've done and continue to do. |
